Many who call themselves henna or mehndi "artists" offer "black" or colored henna. Do not have work done by anyone who offers such products. Henna is a all-natural plant based paste and can only produce color ranging from pumpkin to russet to other shades of brown. Paste marketed as "black henna" is typically full of chemicals including  PPD or para-phenylenediamine. PPD is used in black hair dye and should never be placed on the skin.

In fact, it is ILLEGAL to put PPD on skin as it has not been approved for this use. PPD is a potential carcinogen that can cause blistering, scarring and a permanent mark where your "henna" was. Using "black" henna can cause serious and lifelong illness and injury.

This is what "black" henna can do. ^
